||| Study on Sustainability of Local and Informal Seed System for Small Scale Farmers in Ethiopia and Asia

Existence of local and informal seed provision has been observed in spite of rapid specialization of seed provision through modernization of agriculture. Conditions and environment, contribution of different actors, and perception of farmers to sustain such provision mechanism have been documented and analyzed using mainly cases of Tef cultivation in Ethiopia.

International Treaties, contribution of civil society sector, recognition by government although not so positive are main external factors. Recognition by farmers of importance of different varieties and demands for new varieties are internal factors shared by farmers themselves.

Sharing such information by external actors/players is recommended for further sustainability of local/informal system during intervention for improvement of agriculture.

Concept of this research results has been extended to analyze situations in Asia and survey has been carried out in Nepal, Myammer, and Vietnam as well as in Japan.

Background and effects of Abolition of ‘Major Crop Seeds Provision Law’ (Shuyou Sakumotsu Shushi Hou) in 2018 is also studies in relation to the research.
